Prominent American explorer, military officer, and politician (1813–1890) who mapped the Oregon Trail, played a prominent part in conquering California during the Mexican War, and ran in 1856 as the first Republican presidential candidate. Ink signature, “Yours truly, J. C. Fremont, Washington 17th Jany 1862,” on an off-white 4.75 x 1.5 slip. Mounting remnants to reverse, and a vertical fold through a single letter of signature, otherwise fine condition.
