John C. Fremont - Southern Trans-Continental Railroad (Texas) A $1000 debt certificate payable as imprinted to John C. Fremont and signed by him on the verso. Fremont, a Union General during the Civil War, earned the nickname "The Pathfinder" for his earlier exploration in the Southwestern United States. The financing of this venture was to be accomplished by the sale of bonds based on a grant to Fremont by Texas of eight million acres of land. However, the French agents employed for the purpose of selling the bonds falsely claimed that they were guaranteed by the United States government in their marketing efforts. Fremont, though not directly involved in the deception, was prosecuted in absentia by France. Uncancelled. Extremely Fine. A significant piece of railroad and Western history. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
