John C. Fremont Document Signed "J.C. Fremont." This 8" x 5.5" document is a bond for $1000 due to John C. Fremont upon the surrender of his 50 acres of land on the 37th section of the Southern Trans-Continental Railroad. This section would consist of 20 miles. Bonds like this were used to help fund the large undertaking. Fremont's goal was to unite Texarkana to Jefferson, Texas. This project failed and the first Trans-Continental Railroad through Texas was not finished until 1881. Fremont was one of the leading proponents this endeavor. His signature can be found on the reverse of this document in bold, dark ink.

Our document is in fine condition, with mild staining around the edges from water or smoke damage; there are also several vertical hard creases. Railroads were the "dreams come to life" of men who wanted to see the continent united. Even if their initial attempts failed, in time the coasts and states were linked by a system of rails that would eventually bring about the completion of Manifest Destiny. Bonds like this one made it possible for these railroads to be funded. Mr. Fremont was one of the men who kept these projects alive. A great document!
