John C. Fremont Club Constitution
John C. Frémont Club Constitution, manuscript document, "The Fremont Club of Warren", two pages on six pages bound with grommets, 8" x 12", ca. 1856, location unknown. The Platform and Constitution of a local club supporting the 1856 Republican candidate for U.S. President, John C. Frémont. The organization's "platform" is the clever slogan "Free men; Free speech; Free soil and Fremont!" The constitution outlines general membership duties and goals. This document could have come from any number of Northern locales, however research into its 46 signatories could shed light on its place of origin. By the time of his presidential nomination, the abolitionist Fremont had earned considerable fame as an explorer and army officer. Light overall browning with minimal soiling. Fine condition.
