John C. Fremont Autograph Letter Signed "John C. Fremont." This 5.5" x 8.5" one page letter is dated June 28, 1887. In full it reads, "You may rest assured we will not forget to send the photographs to you as soon as they are taken." The letter is mounted on a second sheet of paper and is in fine condition, with only two small chips to one edge. Included with the letter is the original mailing envelope.

Fremont was an explorer, major general, and politician. As an explorer he is known for mapping the Oregon Trail; as a major general he played a huge part in the acquisition and conquering of California during the Mexican War. And finally, as a politician he was the first Republican presidential candidate in 1856. In 1856 the issue of slavery was a large part of what distinguished politicians from one another. Fremont, who was once pro-slavery, had changed his position during his travels westward. However, his home state of Missouri was pro-slavery so his bids for political office were not fruitful. A jack-of-all-trades, John C. Fremont is a fascinating character in the history of our county and its manifest destiny. This letter will be at home in any collection pertaining to the westward expansion or political memorabilia. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
