ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 9.75, March 30, 1822. As secretary of war under Monroe, Calhoun responds to an inquiry. from Congressman Jonathan Russell. In part: “I received your note of yesterday…On examining the candidates from Massachusetts, it was found that only one of those you recommended would be appropriate. Mr. Daniels standing first on your list was selected.
