Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. Partial ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 6.5, no date. In part: “Your plan is exceedingly judicious, and you have been very successful in its execution. You will reach by it, the understanding of many, which could not be in any other way. I hope you will find leisure to continue your valuable labor. The cause is great…I have prepared a paper addressed to my political friends & supporters, assigning my reasons for refusing to permit my name to go before the Baltimore convention.” The signed portion of the letter has been neatly affixed to the bottom edge. In very good condition, with trimmed edges and wrinkling.
