Partly-printed DS, signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, War Department letterhead, May 30, 1820. Calhoun, as Secretary of War, signs a revolutionary claim granting Israel Wells, “a Private in the Army of the Revolution,” a pension “at the rate of eight dollars per month.” The white seal affixed to the lower left remains intact, with slight creasing and toning. In very good condition, with slight brushing to signature, tape-repaired partial separations to horizontal folds (one fold passing through the signature), a toned strip of tape to top edge, and some toning and chips to edges.
