Partly-printed DS, signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 10, July 1, 1822. Calhoun informs Lieutenant Thompson Wheelock “that on the first instant the President of the United States appointed you a Brevet Second Lieutenant…You will, immediately on receipt hereof, please to communicate to this Department your acceptance or non-acceptance of said appointment.” A clipped magazine article is affixed to the second integral page. In very good condition, with uniform toning, a couple slight separations to edges of folds, a few creases, and a couple pencil notations.
