John C. Calhoun Autograph Letter Signed “J. C. Calhoun”. One page, 8” x 9.75”, Fort Hill, August 9, 1838, to Mr. Ogden Niles, with endorsements on the verso. This letter finds John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) attending to a task common to all of us: canceling a subscription. Calhoun cancels his subscription due “my frequent absences from home”. Calhoun's varied political career ranged from serving as vice-president under Presidents John Adams and Andrew Jackson, a Secretary of State and a Secretary of War. Calhoun was a radical proponent of slavery calling it a “positive good”. The letter has been repaired with archive tape and is soiled and stained in several spots, else good condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
