<B>John C. Calhoun Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> “<I>J. C. Calhoun</B></I>”. One page, 8” x 9.75”, Fort Hill, August 9, 1838, to Mr. Ogden Niles, with endorsements on the verso. This letter finds John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) attending to a task common to all of us: canceling a subscription. Calhoun cancels his subscription due “<I>my frequent absences from home</B></I>”. Calhoun's varied political career ranged from serving as vice-president under Presidents John Adams and Andrew Jackson, a Secretary of State and a Secretary of War. Calhoun was a radical proponent of slavery calling it a “positive good”. The letter has been repaired with archive tape and is soiled and stained in several spots, else good condition. <I>From the collection of Henry E.
