ALS signed "J. C. Calhoun," one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, August 6, 1824. Addressed from the War Department, a handwritten letter to the president of the Branch Bank, "U. States, & Agent, etc. Chillicothe, Ohio," in part: "Herewith you will receive a statement of the alterations which have taken place in the rolls of your agency since the 4th of March 1824. You will pay all Pensioners as heretofore directed from the aggregate amount due the Pensioners of your agency for the half year ending on the 4th of September 1824, the sum of eight hundred and ninety one dollars and twenty cents being the amount of two years pay due seven Pensioners who have failed to apply for their stipends for the last two years, will be deducted, leaving a balance of forty thousand nine hundred and forty dollars and seventy one cents, which will be ordered to your credit from the Treasury Department. In the months of June and December in each year, you will report all deaths and removals which may take place within your agency"¦Particular attention should be paid to the instructions issued in March 1819, requiring reports to be made to the Secretary of War of all Invalid cases in which any reduction may have taken place in the rate of allowance in consequence of the Surgeon"™s certificate."
