Famed American naturalist (1837–1921) best known for his writings on nature and travel. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, December 16, 1915. Handwritten letter to American dramatic critic and author William Winter, with a reference to a famous breakfast held in honor of Oliver Wendell Holmes in December 1879. in part: "The copy of your plump volume of poetry has reached me just as we are packing up & ready to start for Washington. Thank you heartily for it & for the fine inscription. I spent an hour with it last night. I find some notable lyrics here & I am sensible of the music & sweetness of it. With what long long thoughts I read the tribute to Ada Clare. I re-read the Holmes poem & saw you in my minds eye as you looked that Dec. 4th 1879 when you read it at the famous breakfast. Your hair was as brown then as a thrush's wing. How few of all of those who have heard you are now living! You have that wonderful gift which Holmes had of rising to an occasion. I anticipate many pleasant moments dipping into your volume." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
