ALS signed “J. Brooks,” one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, January 19, 1818. Handwritten letter to James T. Austin, who was appointed as an agent to report on the boundary disputes enumerated in the fourth article of the 1814 Treaty of Ghent. In part: "Your letter dated the 3d ulto. was duly received…I felt indeed truly gratified with its reception as it announced to me the favourable termination of a question of national controversy, particularly interesting to Massachusetts. But the pleasure was enhanced by the reflection that your assiduous investigations of the merits of our claim, & discriminate attention in spreading them in a luminous form before the Commissioners, had been rewarded with entire success." In very good to fine condition, with scattered foxing and toning to the letter, and seal-related paper loss and toning to the integral address leaf. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.
