Significant ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, March 21, 1864. Handwritten letter to William Poole in New York, commenting on the American Civil War. In part: "All parties here now admit that Slavery is perishing under the great war raging among you, & few now say much in favor of the insurrection & its authors. Our gov't seems disposed to act fairly in the case, & our people will, I believe, rejoice with you when the war is over, with slavery at an end, & the integrity of your country restored." In very good to fine condition, with a few small stains and a repaired tear to the blank integral leaf.
