Irish poet, journalist, author, and activist (1844-1890) who was transported to Western Australia for his association with the Irish Republican Brotherhood (the 'Fenians'); he escaped the colony in 1869 and settled in Boston, where he found work as a poet and reported for The Pilot. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 9, The Pilot Editorial Rooms letterhead, May 2, 1889. Handwritten letter on a political matter, in part: "I earnestly hope that the Mayor will send in Mr. Cummings' name again. I cannot understand the defeat, for a majority promised directly to vote for him, & I think they will do so next time." In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge.
