Pioneer, colonial militia officer, and sheriff (1738–1784) who raised men to support General George Rogers Clark during the Illinois Campaign in the Revolutionary War. Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, signed twice, “Jno. Bowman,” one page, 17.5 x 10, April 7, 1779. Two separate promissory notes on a single page in which Bowman agrees to pay John Todd of Kentucky “the sum of two hundred pounds Virginia Currency” and “One Hundred & eight pounds sixteen shillings Virginia Currency.” In very good condition, with repaired separations to intersecting folds.
