Popular silent film actor (1885–1936) whose career ended with the advent of sound. He committed suicide by drowning in the Pacific Ocean, which served as the inspiration for A Star Is Born. Outstanding vintage matte-finish 7.25 x 9.25 Hartsook portrait, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Duncan Bass, in appreciation of a very nice chat, Sincerely, John Bowers.” A few trivial spots of soiling, mild silvering, and lightly trimmed edges, otherwise fine condition.
