Cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln who served as a Union general and delegate from the Dakota Territory to the House of Representatives (1814–1872). ALS signed “J. B. S. Todd,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, Fort Randall, July 20, 1866. Letter to J. W. Batchedor. In part: “I have your note covering my photograph transmitted through the War Dept. I regret very much that we have no artist in this quarter to touch it up, as you desire—we are too far removed from the centre of civilization to afford the luxury of the fine arts—I can therefore only return it…I am glad to hear that you are progressing finely with your picture of the last hours of the President and hope, and do not doubt, that it will be every thing that you and your friends could wish. The subject is a grand one, the tragic death of our martyr President, and well calculated to excite the loftiest emotions of genius." In very good to fine condition, with five unobtrusive horizontal folds and an area of staining to the lower portion of all pages.
