Letter to Lt. Col. Thompson, commanding the Volunteer Troops at Piscataway. In part: “Information having been received that the enemy’s fleet have descended the Potowmack & appear to be destined to some other point than this, you are hereby instructed to call in all the volunteer corps under your command & march them back to this city where you will dismiss them from public service until further orders…You will be pleased to communicate to the troops the most cordial thanks and high approbation of the President, as well as for the alacrity with which in a moment of peril, they obeyed the call of their country, as for the very orderly & soldier-like conduct while in the field.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature) scattered staining and soiling, and some paper loss to left edge.
