British Army officer (1750–1780) hanged as a spy during the American Revolution, due to an incident in which he attempted to assist Benedict Arnold's attempted surrender of the fort at West Point, New York, to the British. Stunning hand-colored engraved portrait entitled, "The Unfortunate Death of Major Andre, (Adjutant General to the English Army) at Head Quarters in New York, Oct'r 2, 1780, who was found within the American Lines in the character of a Spy," 9.5 x 13.75, with "Hamilton delin, Goldar sculp" just beneath the image. In fine condition, with light soiling and two small binding tears to the left edge.
