Manuscript DS as president, one page on vellum, 14 x 13, February 13, 1798. A grant for a parcel of land issued to Abner and Jesse Barker of Pennsylvania. Countersigned by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering. Moderate intersecting folds (vertical folds passing through two letters of Adams’ signature), overall soiling and wrinkling, and a spot to last letter of signature, otherwise good to very good condition. The signature is large and quite legible. The paper seal is worn, cracked, and toned, but mostly intact.

Abner Barker, one of the individuals mentioned here, was a leading East Coast merchant and proponent of education and one of the founders of the Western University of Pennsylvania, which evolved into the present-day University of Pittsburgh. Later in the year, Adams would also sign the Alien and Sedition Acts, legislation later viewed as being designed to stifle criticism of the Adams Administration.
