Revolutionary War–dated third-person ANS to Edme Jacques Genet, signed within the text “Mr. Adams,” one page, 5.25 x 2.25, July 9, 1778. In full: “Mr. Adams conveys to Mr. Genet all the Papers he has rec’d, by the last vessells.” In very good to fine condition, with some areas of light toning.

Following France’s declaration of alliance with the fledgling United States in the spring of 1778—made official with the Treaty of Alliance, guaranteeing military support between the two nations, and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, establishing a commercial alliance—John Adams boarded the Continental Navy frigate Boston headed for France. Corresponding extensively with Edme Jacques Genet, of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Adams provided information about the treaties and events in America to be passed on to the French public, whose support was crucial. A handsomely penned note regarding America’s most important ally in the Revolution.
