Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13 x 16.5, June 5, 1798. President Adams appoints George Gillasspy “a Surgeon on the Navy.” Signed at the conclusion by Adams, and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, mild rippling and wrinkling, a few small pinholes of paper loss, some scattered toning, and portions of Adams’s signature a bit light, but completely legible. Gillasspy gained distinction for his handling of the 1797 yellow fever epidemic on the frigate United States berthed at Philadelphia.
