Full free frank, measuring 9.25 x 7.75 unfolded, with franked panel measuring 4.75 x 3.5, addressed by Adams to the wife of Supreme Court Justice William Cushing, “Mrs. Hannah Cushing, Scituate,” and franked directly below the addressee’s name, “J. Adams.” Manuscript postal markings along top edge read, “Quincy Ma. Jany. 17th Free.” An outer edge is also docketed in an unknown hand. Intersecting folds, two through single letters of signature, some mild toning and soiling to panel, with more soiling and creasing to outer panels, and vertical pencil notation along right edge, otherwise very good condition. Cushing was an early Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and was the longest-serving of the Court's original members, sitting on the bench for 21 years. In 1796, he would turn down President Washington’s appointment to become Chief Justice. Despite the flaws, the address panel remains legible and quite clean, and many of the flaws could be matted out.
