Manuscript DS as president, one page, 14 x 13, February 13, 1798. Adams grants a tract of land to Abner and Jesse Barker of Pennsylvania under “’an act providing for the sale of the lands of the United States in the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio and above the mouth of the Kentucky River.’” Signed at the conclusion by Adams and countersigned by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering. In good to very good condition, with heavy intersecting folds, two through single letters of signature, small brush to last letter of signature, overall toning and wrinkling, and some scattered soiling. The white wafer seal is toned and cracked, but mostly intact.

Abner Barker, one of the land recipients, was a leading East Coast merchant and proponent of education who became one the founders of the Western University of Pennsylvania. That esteemed school evolved into the present-day University of Pittsburgh. Interestingly, the same year that Adams approved this grant, the president signed the Alien and Sedition Acts, legislation later viewed as being designed to stifle criticism of the Adams Administration. A unique link to Pittsburgh history!
