Union general during the Civil War, a confidant of Ulysses S. Grant, and later US Secretary of War. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Rawlins in uniform, by Brady of New York (and so noted in the lower border), boldly signed in black ink, “Yours truly, Jno. A. Rawlins.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 7.5 x 9. In fine condition, with just a bit of scattered light toning and foxing. A handsome offering of the man General Grant referred to as the most nearly indispensable man he had around him.
