Lawyer, plantation owner, and Confederate general (1828–1865) considered one of the South’s best tactical cavalry commanders. Shortly before the end of the war, he was shot and killed by a fellow Confederate cavalry officer during an argument about military matters. Civil War–dated ALS signed “Jno. A. Wharton, Brig Genl, Comdg Div,” one page, 5 x 5.75, August 17, 1863. Response to a general written from his headquarters in Rome, Georgia, declining to appear at the board of examination. In full: “I am sorry indeed to be compelled on account of serious indisposition to decline appearing as requested on the Board of Examination at Jacksonville, Ala.” In very good condition, with a small repaired area of paper loss affecting a few words of the text, all writing light but legible, and show-through from docketing to reverse.
