Union general and politician (1812–1900) who fought at the battles of Belmont, Fort Donelson, and Shiloh, and was a rival to his commander, U. S. Grant. War-dated endorsement from Fort Donelson, signed “John A. McClernand,” on an off-white 3.25 x 3.25 vertically-lined slip clipped from a larger document, dated March 3, 1862. The endorsement reads, “Approved and respectfully referred to Major Genl. U. S. Grant,” and signed at the conclusion by McClernand. In very good condition, with light overall toning and soiling.
