American military officer and statesman (1826–1886) who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. An activist on behalf of veterans’ affairs, Logan was instrumental in the creation of Memorial Day as a public holiday. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Logan in uniform, stamped on the reverse “Published by E. & H. T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York, from photographic negative in Brady’s National Portrait Gallery,” signed in black ink in the lower border, “Yours truly, John A. Logan, Maj. Genl,” and signed again on the reverse, “John A. Logan, Maj. Genl.” A few trivial ink marks to lower border, slight brushing to signature on reverse, remnants of a removed notation to reverse, and a small pencil notation, otherwise fine condition.
