From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. One of three of the first San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs hired in the Department's history, under John "Jack" Coffee Hays, John A. Freaner, Note star badge on lapel. Hays had met Freaner through John’s brother James Freaner. James was a correspondent that covered the Mexican War for the New Orleans Delta newspaper. James signed his dispatches simply “Mustang”. John Freaner also became one of Hays’ land investment partners in the Oakland and Alameda areas of California.
