Dix (1798–1879) was Secretary of the Treasury, US Senator, governor of New York, and a Union major general during the Civil War; Wood (1812–1881) was mayor of New York City and a US congressman. Two items: ALS signed John A. Dix, one page both sides, 7.75 x 10 lightly-lined page, September 3, 1851. Dix responds to the Honorable John A. King declining an invitation; and an ink signature and sentiment, “Sincerely, Fernando Wood, Mayor” on an off-white 5.25 x 3.5 slip imprinted with “Mayor’s Office New York” and dated May 29, 1861. In overall fine condition, with creasing, light soiling, and a strip of adhesive staining along the left edge of the Dix letter, and trimmed edges to the Wood signature.
