Naval leader (1809-1870) who headed the Union Navy's ordnance department during the Civil War and developed a number of guns and cannons. Civil War-dated ALS signed “J. A. Dahlgren,” one page, 5 x 7.75, March 26, 1862. Letter to Assistant Secretary of the Navy Gustavus Fox, in part: "I send up two deserters from Frederic. One of them (Johnson) says there are 20,000 men there, that they make no preparation for a stand but will fall back." In fine condition.
