Naval leader (1809–1870) who headed the Union Navy's ordnance department during the Civil War and developed a number of guns and cannons. ALS signed “J. A. Dahlgren,” one page, 5 x 8, March 26, [no year]. Letter to the assistant secretary of the navy. In part: “I send up two deserters…one of them (Johnson) says there are 20,000 men there, that they make no preparation for a stand but will fall back—that some boats are building at Tappahanock [sic] &c.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), slight brushing to some text, and a few pencil notations. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite bust portrait of Dahlgren in uniform.
