Expert's Report and Literature: cf. the text of the preceding painting, lot 206 The extensive Josephiklause dating to the middle of the 18th century, was an important part of the system of waterways and ponds used in the timber industry of the lower Waldviertel area. Due to the increased demand of the capital Vienna, the industry boomed during the 18th century and its profitability led to Joseph Edler von Fürnberg's acquisition of the entire Weinberger Forest between 1756 and 1769. The trees floated downriver to the Danube, and then transported onward to Vienna. When the demand for fire-wood declined this system was shut down for good in 1870. matches lot 206.
