ALS in German, signed “J. Brahms,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, January 26, 1889. Letter to a gentleman. Translated, in full, “My sincerest thanks for your chatty note and the copies, but - that was a silly trifle compared to all the other things I need to thank you for! The lovely and precious hours and days that you so kindly shared in Fr. and that I still remember so fondly. With some envy, I wonder how things perhaps continued for you the following week in Rudesheim? I would have loved to accompany you there, and it is imperative that I return to your area soon.” In fine condition, with date added in the recipient’s hand, pencil notation to top of first page, several small binding holes to left edge, and writing lightly showing through from opposing sides. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Brahms’ hand.
For more than 20 years, Brahms was a frequent guest at a friend’s residence in Rudesheim, where he wrote his Symphony No. 3 and also participated in the unveiling of the Niederwalddenkmal monument, commemorating the foundation of the German Empire following the Franco-Prussian War. Later this year, he met with a representative sent by Thomas Edison in Vienna, who invited him to make an experimental recording. The result, an abbreviated version of his Hungarian dance on the piano, is considered to be the earliest recording made by a major composer. Desirable correspondence referencing Brahms’ desire to return to one of his favorite places to visit.
