ALS in German, signed “J. Br.,” on a 5.5 x 3.5 correspondence card with Clara Schumann’s return address stamp, postmarked February 7, 1893. The letter is to his publisher, Simrock, in which he writes about the time he spent with Frau Schumann, her health, and that he found her well and in good spirits. Clara Schumann, wife of composer Robert Schumann, was herself a composer and pianist of distinction. Brahms became a part of the Schumann household as a young man, and he and Clara Schumann remained intimate associates for the remainder of their lives. The nature of their relationship gave rise to much gossip, and vicious rumormongers suggested that it was a love affair between the two that eventually drove Robert Schumann insane. In fine condition, with a few minor smudges to the text. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
