Count Gyulay joined his father's regiment in 1781 at the age, participated in numerous Austrian campaigns and was repeatedly decorated for his exceptional courage. 1789 Major in the campaign against the Turks. 1794 awarded the highest Austrian military medal, the Order of Maria-Theresia. 1800 Commander of the Order of Maria-Theresia. 1806 Banus of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia. After the Battle of Leipzig 1813, he received decorations from the Emperor, the Tsar, the King of Bavaria, and the King of Prussia. 1823 Commander-General of Bohemia. 1830 president of the Court's war council in Vienna, where he died in 1831, after 50 years of military service. Count Gyulay is shown in a general's uniform, wearing his numerous military decorations ('Kommandeurskreuz des österreichischen Militär-Maria-Theresienordens', 'Kommandeurskreuz des bayerischen Militär-Max-Joseph-Ordens', 'Großkreuzen des österreichischen Leopolds-Ordens', the Russian 'Alexander Newsky-Orden', the Prussian 'Roten-Adler-Orden', Royal Bavarian 'Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden' and the Austrian Imperial 'Kanonenkreuz'.) Literature: Krafft's portrait served as the model for an engraving by Carl Hermann Pfeiffer (1769-1829) depicted in Marianne Frodl-Schneemann: "Johann Peter Krafft 1780 - 1856", monograph and cat. of paintings. Vienna-Munich 1984, p.158. The catalogue of works still lists the location of this painting (151), only now rediscovered, as unknown. Johann Peter Krafft studied with Füger in Vienna from 1799 to 1802, then with Jaques-Louis David in Paris until 1804. Returned to Vienna he became one of the best portrait painters of his era, employing his exceptional talent in numerous portraits of members of the imperial family and some of the best known history painting of the Napoleonic wars. Goethe also singled him out for praise "Among all the artists augmenting the honour of their home town, one needs to point to the genius of Krafft". In Vienna Krafft also taught at the Academy and served as the director of the Imperial Art Gallery.
