Johann Georg Platzer (St. Michael in Eppan/South Tyrol 1704 -1761)
Johann Georg Platzer (St. Michael in Eppan/South Tyrol 1704 -1761) "Die Opferung der Tochter Jephtas" / The Sacrifice of Jephta's Daughter and "Joseph wird von seinen Brüdern verkauft" / Joseph sold by his Brothers, matching paintings, oil on metal, 23,5 x 30,5 cm, w/ frame, (Wo).€ 140.000 - 230.000 US $ 138.600 - 227.700 Johann Georg Platzer, one of Europe's foremost proponents of society painting, probably came to Vienna in ca. 1726 where he struck up a friendship with his colleague and contemporary Franz Christoph Janneck from Graz. Small-scale cabinet paintings such as the two works above were created for art lovers and as such personally executed by the artist, in this case Platzer, himself, rather than with the help of his assistants, as was more commonly the case during the Baroque period. The delicate style and vibrant colours catered to the refined tastes of the noble and bourgeoise buyers. The picture is full of highly animated figures from what one might call a "paradise of the senses". Two paintings by Johann Georg Platzer were sold by the Dorotheum on 7. October 1998 (lot 313) for the record sum of € 590.000. Provenance: the two paintings were a gift of Emperor Josef II. to one of the oldest and most renowned Austro-Hungarian noble families, in whose possession they remained until today.
