Johann Friedrich August Tischbein (Maastricht 1750-1812 Heidelberg), attributed to, A portrait of the Duchess Anna Amalie von Sachsen-Weimar Eisenach (?), brush and black wash, black chalk, heightened with white, 41.6 x 29.5 cm, mounted, laid down and framed, (GL). Between 1759 and 1775 Duchess Anna Amalie was the regent of the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, representing her son Carl August; as "Duchess Mother" she exercised a considerable influence. Her keen interest in literature, music, art and the theatre made her the initiatior of a significant intellectual and cultural development in Weimar. In the 1780s and 1790s the circle around Anna Amalia, the so-called "Round Table" gave important impulses for a vivid cultural life in Weimar. In 1795 Johann Friedrich August Tischbein sojourned in the town. In the following year he painted the portrait of Crown Princess Luise and her sister. Unlike the other portraits of the Duchess known to date, this is not an official court portrait, but it shows her personality in a more private, intimate atmosphere. EURO 1,000 1,500 US $ 980 1,500
