Naval engagement off Helgoland, signed J. Neumann, oil on canvas, 75 x115 cm, w/ frame, (Rei)

The painting depicts the naval engagement off Helgoland on 9. May 1864. At the time of the German-Danish War - in which Austria was involved as a member of the 'Deutscher Bund' - the German navy was ill-equipped compared to the Austrian Adriatic Fleet, the assistance of which was consequently requested by chancellor Bismarck. The flagship of the Austrian squadron, the frigate "Schwarzenberg", under the command of Tegethoff is shown with its top sail in flames after a shot set fire to it during the above engagement. The second vessel displaying the Austrian flag is the frigate "Radetzky". Faced with superior numbers the Danes eventually withdrew. The Austrian dead were buried at the cemetery of Ritzebüttelin Cuxhaven, commemorated by a granite obelisk bearing the names of all those killed in action and crowned by a k.& k. double eagle. The monument was designed by Martin Haller, architect of the Hamburg city hall.
