Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938)

The US-American photographer originally worked in the advertising industry and from 1962 onwards he devoted his work entirely to photography, genre photography in particular. Joel Meyerowitz became known through his depictions of street scenes in the style of Henry Cartier-Bresson. At the beginning he was principally interested in black-and-white photography yet since the mid-sixties he has also been working increasingly with color photography. From that point onwards the themes of the portrait and of architecture appear mostly. Meyerowitz created the series ‘Aftermath’ (2001-2002) with photographs after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 against a public photography prohibition by the city. Meyerowitz is a double fellowship holder of the Guggenheim Scholarships and he was also awarded the ‘Deutsche Fotobuchpreis’ (German for ‘German Photography Book Award’). His works are among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Boston Museum of Fine Art.
