Forming techniques include slab built, hand built, and wheel thrown. EdwardÕs surface techniques include sgraffito, brush work and, on monumental works, stylized abstract sprigs or mat appliquŽ. These techniques were inspired by Japanese Sumi and Abstract Expressionist painters. Edwards was a student of Peter Voulkos at Otis. He also studied under Marguerite Wildenhain and Soji Hamada. Edwards felt his greatest accomplishments were maintaining quality ware as a production potter and supporting himself and his wife as a professional ceramicist.
