Journalist, writer, and folklorist (1848–1908) best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 9.5, personal letterhead, January 5, 1898. In part: “There was a remark in your brother’s notice…that was kinder than I expected or deserved—that has puzzled me no little. Something like this—‘Here was have the beginning of a new Lincoln myth,’ etc…Does he mean that…Lincoln was our greatest president, or the suggestion that he was the greatest and most typical of Americans? I wasn’t writing for any northern audience when I made those observations, but putting it down merely to please myself. Everybody who knows me in the south knows of my admiration for Abraham Lincoln…I have most of my ideas of Abraham Lincoln from a long talk I once had with Alexander Stephens. I have never read a biography of Lincoln. The man, his character, his behavior, and his individuality, are all too real to my mind to make a biography desirable—unless I could write it myself…I sincerely hope the Lincoln I know and admire is no myth.” In fine condition, with a strip of old mounting remnants along the right side of the second page.
