From a notation on back of another Wanno Gano painting in this auction: A member of the Cherokee Tribe, Waano-Gano, has devoted much of his time to the study of his race; their customs, costumes, ornaments, philosophy and symbology. His work has been displayed in many exhibitions, including Century of Progress at Chicago, (Indian Section). Among his larger works are the murals in the dining room of the Sherman Institute, Riverside, Calif., and in the Children's Incurable Ward of the Los Angeles General Hospital. He is also the designer of the Indian Achievement Award Medal, which has been presented to the "Greatest Living Indians" of today. One medal has been awarded each year since 1933.
