Joe Scheuerle (1874-1948), Drawing with Signatures
Pow Wow at Montezuma’s Lodge, Feb 17. 1915 5 1/2” x 4” Mixed Media on Card Hand-drawn card done by Joe Scheuerle to commemorate a gathering at the home of Carlos Montezuma, where Charlie Russell was the guest of honor. It is believed that Scheuerle drew a card in the likeness of each attendee at the event; this card being the one for H.H. Cross whom they’d nicknamed “Sachem”. The cards were hand-signed by all the guests: Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), John T. McCutcheon (1870-1949), Emerson Hough (1857-1923), Reinhold H. Palenske (1884-1954), Lorado Taft (1860-1936), Henry H. Cross (1837-1918), Joe Scheuerle (1873-1948), Albert Beachy, and Carlos Montezuma (1865-1923). Montezuma, an Apache Indian, was a well-known activist and Native leader. The matching card of Charlie Russell’s image is shown in “Charles M. Russell, Word Painter: Letters 1887-1926” by Brian W. Dippie.
