Joe Oriolo - Original Comic Strip Art for Felix
Joe Oriolo - Original Comic Strip Art for Felix the Cat Daily dated 12-29-56 (King Features Syndicate, 1956). The first superstar to come out of the newly-emerging field of cinematic animation was Felix the Cat. Taking his first bow in Sullivan Studio's 1919 "Feline Follies," Felix (who was called "Master Tom" in his first two outings), was an instant hit. Graduating to the comics page in 1923, with art by his creator, Otto Messmer, Felix made his last Sullivan appearance in 1928, and more or less retired from the silver screen to concentrate on his print career. Messmer handed the strip over to his assistant, Joe Oriolo, in 1954, who saw the strip through the end of its first run in 1967. Oriolo was also responsible for Felix's triumphant return to the screen, this time the TV screen, in 1960, giving rise to a rebirth of popularity for the mischievous feline. The strip offered here is a prime example of Oriolo at his best, from early in his tenure as lead artist. Measuring approximately 23" x 6.5" overall and in excellent condition, the strip is signed by Oriolo in the third panel. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
