Joe Kubert - Original Cover Art for Justice League of America #73 (DC, 1969). Aside from his well-loved run on Hawkman, Joe Kubert did very little superhero work, and so fans who enjoy seeing his lush, organic style applied to long-underwear types have to content themselves with a few odd pieces here and there; one place they can look is in a short run of covers Kubert did for Justice League of America, just as the Silver Age was giving way to Bronze. Offered here is an excellent cover featuring the Justice Society looking on as a seemingly super-powered kid rips a lamp post from the ground. This issue is also significant in that it marked the first Silver Age appearance of the Golden Age Superman. Speaking of Superman, his face and chest emblem feature significant white-out -- one wonders if DC editorial felt that Kubert's version didn't resemble the "house" (i.e. Murphy Anderson) style enough, and had it corrected, a common practice they applied to Jack Kirby's work on Jimmy Olsen. Aside from the Supes corrections, there is virtually no white-out on the piece; it measures 11.5" x 17.5", with an image area of 10" x 15".
