Colonel in the United States Air Force and a USAF Command Pilot (born 1928) who participated in Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior in 1960, setting a world record for the highest skydive from a height greater than 19 miles; he was also the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon. Matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Kittinger performing his then record-breaking skydive, signed in black ink, "Only 76,400 feet to go, 16 Nov. 1959, Alamagordo, N.M.—Joseph W. Kittinger, Jr., Captain USAF." Reverse of photo bears a Wide World Photos stamp. In fine condition. Accompanied by a check filled out and signed by noted collector Cornelius Greenway, dated December 29, 1959, made payable to Kittinger, who adds a brief note in black ink, "Sorry this took so long, J. Kittinger."
