TLS, one page, 8.5 x 9, no date. DiMaggio reflects on the end of his career. In full: “I certainly agree with your philosophy that a person should never do less than his or her best. It is an admirable belief to be instilling in your students. In fact, I ended my active baseball career because I felt some physical problems would preclude me maintaining the standards I had been previously been able to accomplish.” Light creasing and wrinkling, a mailing fold touching the end of the the “J” in his first name, and a trimmed bottom edge, otherwise fine condition. After a season fraught with injuries, DiMaggio made the difficult decision to retire. This letter casts interesting insight on the character of the Yankee legend and his drive to be the best.
