American boxer (1868-1943) who fought professionally from 1888 to 1904. ‘Chrysanthemum Joe’ weighed no more than 176 lb throughout his career, but he regularly fought heavyweights. He was considered a heavy puncher and a dangerous fighter and though he was never given an opportunity to fight for the heavyweight title, Choyinski enjoyed some stunning victories against famed heavyweights James J. Jeffries and Jack Johnson before they became champions. Two items: an ink signature, “Yours sincerely, Jos. B. Choynski, 5606 Drexel Ave.,” on an off-white 4.75 x 2.25 sheet clipped from a letter; and a handwritten manuscript penned by Joe Choynski on four off-white 8.5 x 11 sheets, unsigned, no date, which reads, in part: “The original Queensbury Rules permitted hitting only with the back of the glove, which called for round arm blows and were not very effective. Most blows landed on contestants ears, and one opponent being faster or more venturesome than the other would land a succession of round arm blows on the ears of his opponents and the English much given to analogy would exclaim: see how he covers his rivals ears, to cover a thing means to box it or put in a box, and thus you get boxing.” In overall fine condition.
